Gospel (of St. Mark), Jerome (of Stridon), patristic exegesis, ancient predicationAbstract
The literature of Christian antiquity undoubtedly can offer many ideas and ways of interpreting Mk 1:1–13. All early tradition connects the Second Gospel with St. Mark, „the interpreter of Peter”. The Church Fathers follow in this wake. St. Jerome informs that St. Peter approved and published the Gospel of Mark in the Christian communities, commanding the reading of it by his own authority. The author of the Vulgate was one of qualified witnesses of Mark’s exegesis. His most salient literary occupation makes him instead a biblical scholar. St. Jerome was the first commentator of the Gospel according to St. Mark. In the Second Gospel’s interpretation we can distinguish those elements that belong to the more solid tradition of the Church. Jerome sticks to the literal wording of the Gospel texts, but he follows faithfully in the footsteps of Origen, his the most significant predecessor and model as philologist and exegete. The predication reveals actual concerns towards the Trinitarian and Christological heresies which challenged the teaching of the Church. The audience in Bethlehem generally consists of monks, nuns and pilgrims. With the considerations of the Gospel’s text, Jerome has been able to show a rich and lively context of his reading. The interpretative applications appear moral, especially the example of the figure of John the Baptist. The Homelies on Mark are also document of the contemporary situation, since they provide some revealing clues to the evolution of New Testament exegesis at the beginning of the fifth century.
