The article presents a monograph The Doctrine of Scripture. Its author, Brad East, draws the reader’s attention to the doctrine of Holy Scripture, that is, a theological elaboration of the nature of inspired books, their attributes and mission. In his opinion, one can speak of a theological ontology of the Bible because of its relationship with the will of God and God's activity made possible through it. Consequently, by virtue of their origin from God and their relationship with Him, the sacred scriptures are characterized by certain objective properties. By God's will, they also perform their proper function within the framework of God's revelation and the economy of grace. East's writings also fit in with the so-called theological interpretation of Scripture, whose spokesmen are trying to regain premodern practices of reading the Bible. The Protestant theologian describes his work as un-Protestant and being based on catholic assumptions. By this he means a reflection effectuated from a perspective that goes beyond protestant traditions in terms of time and theology. This interesting approach, however, raises questions about the nature of catholicity understood in this way. At the end of the article, a critical evaluation of the reviewed monograph is presented. The latter is a valuable compendium of theological reflection on Holy Scripture, though the author did not manage to avoid certain simplifications. The sacramentality of Scripture, emphasized by East, demands a theological refinement that should be based on the relationship between the word of God and the sacrament derived from the liturgy.
