Does Baptism Make One a Citizen? Judaism, Christianity and the Mechanisms of Exclusion in Prussia in the 18th Century

The article discusses the debates on granting civil rights to Jews in Prussia in the late 18th century. The Christian party used to exclude Jews using various arguments such as the assumption that Jewish law rendered them ‘incapable’ of citizenship. This exclusion from civil rights sometimes extended to Jewish converts as well. In the course of those debates, the Jewish party discussed the meaning of Jewish law and thus of Jewish identity as a whole.
