Polish Students at German Universities Against the Backdrop of Student Migrations in the 19th and Early 20th Century
Polish students were one of the most mobile student groups in 19th-century Europe. Nevertheless, they are omitted in non-Polish publications, which tend to present migrations according to the citizenship of students, not their national origin. German universities occupied a special place among foreign universities visited by numerous Polish students from the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 20th cent. Particularly universities in big cities such as Berlin, Leipzig and Munich attracted many young Poles from all the three partitions at the turn of the 20th century. It was in such cities that students got to know each other establishing and maintaining closer social contacts. These contacts later contributed to the integration of Polish political elites and the academic community after the First World War, in the Second Polish Republic. Translated by Agnieszka Chabros
