Th e “Beheaded” Hanseatic League 1408–1416: the Refl ection of the Weak Authority in the Reich?

The uprising in Lübeck in the years 1408–1416 paralyzed the Hansa. The league of cities and merchants resigned from its function as a mediator and arbitrator. The conflicting parties turned to the Roman-German king for help. As Lübeck enjoyed the status of the Reich immediate city, the city stood under direct control of the king. However, at the beginning of the 15th century the imperial authority of the Reich was too weak to solve the conflict. The uprising in Lübeck revealed all the problems the Reich had to cope with. Eventually, the weakness of the Reich prolonged the conflict in Lübeck.
