Pilgrimages in the 15th century, sea travel from Venice to Jaffa

Abstract

The sea voyage of pilgrims going to Jerusalem from Venice to Jafa was characterized  by crampedness, bad nutrition and  poor sanitary conditions. The literature mentions storms, seasickness and other ailments along with the threat of piracy, which were frequent problems of travelers. Nevertheless, it seems that it is a “compressed”  picture constructed on the basis of  many pilgrims’ accounts. During some pilgrimages all the above-mentioned disasters might have happened, but there were many journeys which were pleasant and problem-free. The determining factor here was the weather. The conditions were also affected by the number of pilgrims on board. Taking into account the duration of voyages and the number of passengers, storms, illnesses and deaths were not the norm, but exceptions. Attacks of hostile ships happened very rarely. Despite the fact that all the dangers were quite realistic and fear was a constant companion of all pilgrims, many sea pilgrimages went on peacefully and in a pleasant atmosphere.
