Odbudowa miasta Roztok po II wojnie światowej

W urbanistyce i budownictwie mieszkaniowym w radzieckiej strefie okupacyjnej w Niemczech (w Niemieckiej Republice Demokratycznej) można wyróżnić trzy okresy, które odzwierciedlają również tendencje architektoniczne w Roztoku:
1) w latach 1945–1950 budownictwo inspirowane stylem „Nowa Rzeczowość”;
2) w latach 1950–1957 odbudowa centrów miast w stylu „tradycji narodowej” (w Roztoku gotyk) na wzór sowiecki (z magistralami, placami parad i dominantami miejskimi);
3) przemysłowe budownictwo mieszkaniowe („wielka płyta”): „taniej, lepiej, piękniej” w nawiązaniu do stylu „Nowa Rzeczowość” oraz wznoszenie miast-sypialni z budynkami z wielkiej płyty.
Szczególną formą architektoniczną jest tzw. Bildzeichenarchitektur (architekt Hermann Henselmann), której przykładem są budynki: wieżowiec należący do Uniwersytetu w Lipsku wyobrażający otwartą książkę, wieżowiec reprezentacyjny przedsiębiorstwa VEB Carl Zeiss w Jenie w kształcie teleskopu, wieżowiec-żagiel w Roztoku (projekt nie został zrealizowany). Budownictwo mieszkaniowe miało pierwszeństwo przed urbanistyką.
