In occupied Poland, the Germans used the so-called protective custody (Schutzhaft), which was intended to neutralize potential opposition movement. By June 1941 approximately 44,000 Polish citizens were arrested. The occupiers were particularly eager to use this preventive measure against members of the Polish intelligentsia. More than half of those arrested did not survive the end of the war due to the inhumane conditions in the places of detention.
