“Peasants are slaves to the nobility”
The Condition of Polish peasants in selected works of the European Enlightenment

The objective of this paper is to present assessments and opinions prevalent in European public opinion regarding the condition of the rural population in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the Enlightenment era. Particular emphasis is placed on the manner in which these views were communicated in philosophical works, encyclopedias, travel guides, reports, and correspondences of this time. The aim is to scrutinize the extent to which these perceptions accurately depicted the real conditions in Poland. The author’s focal point is the issue of serfdom, servitude, and the attachment of peasants to the land.
