Abstract

It is believed that women's colleges (collegia mulierum) were an important part of Roman associational life. My analysis of the source material shows that we have no clear evidence for the existence of women's associations, understood as gender-defined bodies with characteristics typical of these organizations (officials, common property, etc.). There were colleges composed entirely of women, but they were not founded as women's associations but as bodies whose members were bound by a common profession or cult.
