On some of the aspects of Józef Jarema’s activity in the artistic community of the French Riviera (1951–1974)

The paper discusses selected aspects of the “Nicaean period” of Józef Jarema’s career and his active participation in the artistic life of the French Riviera. Jarema lived in Nicaea with a fellow painter Maria Sperling between 1951 and 1974. He not only continued working on his paintings but, since 1955, together with Sperling, started to create tapestries. His works were shown in both individual exhibitions in Nicaea and Cannes and group exhibitions organised in the region (in Cagnes-sur-Mer, Antibes, Vence, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Mentone, Monaco); he also wrote texts accompanying the exhibitions. Jarema also made significant contributions to the development of the Art Club in France, not only through his collaboration with the Paris branch, but through the establishment of the new branch in Nicaea. He was also one of the founders of the Festival des Arts Plastiques de la Côte d’Azur, organised in the 1960s.
