Stuck between old and new homeland. The cases of Marian Pankowski and Kalman Segal

Comparing the figures and careers of Pankowski and Segal is more than just a case study. The lives of those two Sanok-born writers – whose paths had parted just after they graduated from junior high school – illustrate two “paths” which, although quite common in contemporary Polish history, are exceptions from the stereotypes permeative traditional historical thinking. A survivor of a Nazi concentration camp, Pankowski managed to resettle in the West and never really considered himself an immigrant and throughout his life he was actively involved in the Polish literary scene. After being released from s Soviet labour camp, Segal returned to Poland; he left the country after the March events of 1968 in the act of solidarity with other Polish citizens of Jewish origin. As a result, the last decade of his life, spent in exile, was devoted to reflections on identity. Both writers corresponded with each other for decades not only through letters (exchanged on the West-East axis), but also in their publications; in the interviews, they very often returned to the question of their identity, openly discussing the consequences of being torn between the old and new homeland.
