From print editing to digital scholarly editing. The example of the novel "On the Province" by Eliza Orzeszkowa

Abstract

The article discusses the transition from print editing to digital editing using the example of the novel Na prowincji (On the Province) by Eliza Orzeszkowa. The author analyzes the challenges and benefits associated with creating a hybrid edition that includes both a print and a digital version. In particular, it focuses on transferring the editorial commentary to the digital environment and utilizing tools like TEI Panorama for text annotation.

Digital editions can provide researchers of Orzeszkowa’s work with tangible benefits, allowing for a more detailed analysis of her language and writing style. The approach to the hybrid edition involves a team of editors working on the text and commentary, followed by a digital team that adapts the material to the digital medium. The digital edition is created using the TEI (Text Encoding Initiative) standard, which enables detailed markup and presentation of the text.
