The world of science and literature in “Sędziwoj”. A handful of remarks by an editor

Sędziwoj by Józef Bogdan Dziekoński is a historical-occult novel that is very significant for the development of Polish fantastic literature. An important component that enabled the author to create a credible fictional world and allows the readers to “immerse” in it are the numerous references to science and literature. Many of them, however, are completely illegible to today’s recipients. This article selects a set of such issues to illustrate the challenges that the editor of Dziekoński’s work faces. They concern non-obvious locations of mottos and quotations, literary works cited by the writer, or issues related to alchemy and its adepts. Looking at the author’s workshop allows us to see his erudition, the effort put into creating the world of the novel, and also to reconstruct his intellectual horizon.
