JOURNAL POLONAIS. NOVEMBRE 1978Roselyne Chenu’s “Dziennik Polski” (The Polish Diary), being the record of the impressions of her visit to Poland in the fall of 1978, is an unusual record. Chenu was not a casual tourist interested in what was happening behind the Iron Curtain. As the secretary of the Fondation d’Hautvillers pour le dialogue des cultures, which aimed to help the opposition intellectual elites of the communist countries, she was well acquainted with the political situation in Poland. She knew little, however, of the everyday life of ordinary people in the communist system, therefore
she recorded all its aspects in great detail. Thus, her diary written originally for her friends, became a valuable historical document over time. The diary also records her impressions of the attitudes of the members of the Polish opposition and their intellectual horizons.
