Inclusion as a Dimension of Social Security of Foreigners: Health and Housing in the European Union
Keywords
inclusion, mixing, healthcare, foreigner, migrantAbstract
The integration of migrants in the EU covers key areas of socio-economic life, including housing and access to healthcare, which are the foundation of social cohesion and effective integration. Eurostat and OECD data as well as research reports indicate that foreigners – especially from outside the EU – are more likely to experience high rental costs and housing instability, which negatively affects their physical and mental health. At the same time, migrants face institutional and economic barriers in accessing medical services, leading to unmet health needs and exacerbating the risk of marginalisation. This situation has consequences for the quality of functioning of entire societies and social security. The EU points to the need to mainstream migrants in housing and health policies, to tackle discrimination and to develop integrated strategies. Ensuring equal rights for foreigners in these areas is not only the fulfilment of legal obligations, but also an investment in the cohesion and stability of the European community.
