On 27−27 March 2014 the Institute of Information Science and Book Studies of the University of Warsaw held a conference that brought together prominent researchers in bibliology, literary studies and history as well as a large group of librarians. The aim of the conference was to exchange ideas and experience in the field of book research. Particular attention was paid to books’ social role in different periods of Polish history – from difficult times of oppression, through challenges of new reality in free Poland to constant changes that occurred in the 20th century. The report summarizes the meeting and briefly outlines papers presented at the conference.
