EDUCATING THE YOUTH BY THE YOUTH: THE RELATIONAL DIMENSION OF THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION IN THE EUROPEAN SCOUT FEDERATION FORMATION

Abstract

The article presents some somebasic principles (and research conclusions) of behavioural genetics and the theory of group socialization that question the outstanding role of the family in the process of upbringing and indicate at the same time that so-called specific environment (not common environment) can fulfi l this role. The next chapter is an attempt of critical evaluation of this theory and indicating its controversial elements. Although the most radical conclusions coming from above-mentioned propositions raise correct objections, showing appreciation in the process of socialization of peer group and trying to describe a mechanism of its impact within coherent theory is a valuable experience. If a peer group plays such a huge role in the process of socialization, then a question arises: in which circumstances couldit become a crucial, positive element of religious and spiritual formation? The latter practical and pastoral part of the article is an attempt to answer this question. It is preceded by a short reflection concerning the relative nature of Church. On the basis of his own experience the author proposed an analysis of specific cases (case studies) through which mechanisms of peer group’s impact on the shape of the religious formation can be seen. The scout method principles, as used by the European Scout Federation, is universal, as it comes from the natural teenage needs and developmental mechanisms which can be easily observed via the application of the scout methodology.
