IS GOD THE CAUSE OF “ALL OUR DEEDS”? METAPHYSICAL CONDITIONS OF THE QUESTION

It appears that a certain uneasiness may arise among those who pray the Liturgy of the Hours from the words of the petition once addressed to God by the inspired author: “Lord, grant us peace, for You alone have done all our deeds” which the Church made part of its official prayer. Does this imply that man is not free in hisactions, and that the cause of both the good and the evil he commits is God himself? The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how the concept of cooperation between the efficient causes, as developed by the metaphysics, allows us, in accordance with the scholastic principle fides quaerens intellectum, to overcome the aforementioned difficulties.
