FREEDOM OF THEOLOGIANS IN THE CHURCH FROM THE APOSTOLIC AGE TO THE NINETEENTH CENTURY

In the contemporary Church, the question of the independence of theological research and the extent of freedom enjoyed by theologians is widely discussed. In antiquity both the clergy (bishops, presbyters and monks) and the laity fulfilled the mission of teaching in the Church and many bishops were eminent theologians. Later, until the thirteenth century, monasteries and cathedral schools were the centres of the academic theology. The golden age of theology and the independence of theologians are linked with the creation of universities and their privileges. The theological schools earned a notable reputation and constituted a “parallel Magisterium” in relation to the bishops and the pope. It was not until the nineteenth century that the doctrine of the Magisterium of the Church, comprising the pope and the episcopate, was clarified. This meant a limitation of the theologians’ competencies and their subordinate role in relation to the Magisterium Ecclesiae.References
