On the origins and forms of the idea of ethics and the morality of scholars and science in 17th and 18th century

The pondering over the morality and ethics of scholars and the knowledge resulting from their work suggest that the authors and their work should possess some kind of exceptional moral, cognitive and intellectual aptitude, and thus, there must be some desirable and acceptable standards of ‘virtues’ that the scholar and science itself should boast. The question is: what are they? The issue is especially noteworthy in the context of the discourse that is shaping modern science, the discourse which formulates the expectations concerning the ethics, morality of science and scientists. One could say that these expectations are still in good standing at present, despite the fact that not only science but also society and the systems as well as demands of people towards science have changed. The practice of science required - and still requires – creative liberty. However, the institutionalization of academic environment implies submission to authorities, which generated – and still generates – tension between the need for scientific liberty and the demands of ‘sponsors’. Another aspect is the relationship between science and politics which was debated by many scholars and philosophers, especially when we take into consideration the morality of science and the moral responsibility of scientists. Reflections on the subject result from the reading of Richard Holmes’s The Age of Wonder. How the Romantic Generation Discovered the Beauty and Terror of Science where the author, describing biographies of scholars, but first of all their achievements and obstacles they faced, emphasizes the moral and ethical aspects of their personalities and scholarly activity.
