This paper uses the occasion of the unprecedented Polish edition of The New Justine – one of the most (in)famous and scandalous works by the Marquis de Sade (Kraków: Eperons, 2022, transl. by Krzysztof Matuszewski, vol. 1-6) – to outline the peculiar history of this book’s original publication and to remind its potential readers of its literary and philosophical significance as opposed to popular albeit facile claims that de Sade’s fiction is mere pornography. It is argued that the consistent development of de Sade’s thought depicts a philosophical odyssey of human quest for sovereignty. It takes its beginning in the enlightened denial of God yet it does not stop there; fully autonomous reason enters an alliance with deified Nature, then it questions its reign over human freedom, just like it has to negate the Other and the Ego itself in order to finally attain the position of nihilistic immoralism in the form of apathetic reiteration of crime.
