Beauty, the World and the Moment. The Aesthetic Background of Hannah Arendt's Politics as interpreted by Jim Josefson

This paper analyzes the aesthetic form of politics by Hannah Arendt as interpreted by Jim Josefson. According to the author of „Hannah Arendt's Aesthetic Politics: Freedom and the Beautiful", the philosopher was looking for her own "transcendent moment" (der Augenblick) and, in order to identify it, she studied the works of such thinkers as: Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Jaspers, Heidegger, Kafka, and Benjamin. Thoughtful criticism of each of the above methods allowed her to formulate her own concept, defined by Josefson as the "aesthetic moment". By distinguishing "the freedom of beauty" as the third face of freedom on a par with the freedom of action and mind known to Arendt readers, Josefson in his book focuses on showing how this freedom, rooted in Jaspers' phenomenology and the non-metaphysical reading of Kant, is to serve as an antidote to alienation from world, which, in his opinion, is the theme that binds all Arendt's works together.
