The article is an attempt to analyze the letter wrote by Pico della Mirandola, On the Language of Philosophers, addressed to Hermolaus Barbaro. The first part of the text presents the context of the dispute, i.e. the epoch-specific tension between philosophy and rhetoric, and the critique of scholastic philosophy from the perspective of the humanists. Highlighting Barbaro’s position allows us to capture the essence of the dispute with Pico, namely: what truth – or truth about what – should we be looking for? Pico’s position was analyzed with the use of oppositions prepared from his text: inside/outside, truth/appearance, reason/senses and drives, philosophy/rhetoric-sophistry, rational man/common man. This allows us to grasp Pico’s thought as paradoxical by definition: rhetoric turns out to cover the essence of things and to discover them at the same time. It is at the same time an obstacle and an indispensable tool for obtaining and expressing thoughts. It is caused by the inevitable historicity of human thought.
