In the current essay I look at the conceptions of war and its relation to human condition, nature, civilization, or an immanent “structure” of power as outlined by Arnold Toynbee, René Girard, Georgio Agamben i George Santayana. A comparative discussion of certain selected elements of their theories in the context of their cultural criticisms allows to discover a number if intriguing common points. Even if some of the analogies discussed turn out to be merely superficial, the discussion throws some new light on issues such as the relation between identity and victim, power and outlaw, a lie and a system or any stable social organization indeed.
