The role and tasks of a nurse in reducing the risk of falls in a geriatric patient with Parkinson’s disease – an individual case study

Abstract

Introduction. Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that leads to motor impairments as well as numerous non-motor symptoms. One of the most serious problems in this group of patients is falls, which constitute a significant threat to the health and life of older adults.

Aim. The aim of this study is to present the role and responsibilities of a nurse in reducing the risk of falls in a geriatric patient with Parkinson’s disease.

Case presentation. The study employed the individual case method and a review of the literature on the diagnostics and treatment methods of geriatric patients with Parkinson’s disease, as well as the nursing problems resulting from the condition. The subject of the study is the care recipient, i.e., a geriatric patient diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and receiving primary health care.

Conclusions. A patient with Parkinson’s disease requires comprehensive, holistic care. A key role is played by the nurse, whose responsibilities include identifying fall risk factors, implementing preventive measures, educating the patient and their family, and monitoring the outcomes of therapy.
