Abstract

Introduction. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer occurring in men aged 15 to 35. Research shows that testicular self-examination has great potential in preventing this disease. However, numerous reports indicate that self-analysis is poorly understood and poorly communicated among young people of many ethnicities. Worryingly, the number of testicular cancer cases has tripled over the last 30 years, with almost 1,100 cases reported in 2010.

Aim. The aim of this study is to assess men’s knowledge and behavior towards the prevention of testicular cancer.

Materials and methods. The survey was conducted in an anonymous manner at the Urology Department of the Provincial Specialist Hospital in Włocławek. 100 male patients took part in the study. Age was defined in the age range from 18 to 46 and above. The data obtained from the survey questionnaire were subjected to Chi-square statistical analysis and presented in tables and charts. The study was conducted using a diagnostic survey.

Results and conclusions. The level of men’s knowledge about testicular cancer prevention is insufficient. The respondents cannot indicate the symptoms of testicular cancer. There isa relationship between knowledge about testicular cancer prevention and self-control performed by the respondents. The respondents demonstrate health-promoting behaviors at a mostly average level. There is a correlation between the level of concern for health characterized by the use of proper health behaviors and sociodemographic factors, i.e. age and place of residence.
