Evaluation of preoperative anxiety in women undergoing planned gynecological surgery

Introduction. Preoperative anxiety is a common issue among patients preparing for surgery. Its intensity significantly affects treatment outcomes and the recovery process. In gynecological procedures, anxiety may be especially strong and complex. Identifying the sources and levels of such anxiety is essential for delivering adequate psychological support and improving patient care.
Aim. The aim of this study was to assess anxiety levels in patients scheduled for gynecological surgery.
Material and Methods. A self-designed questionnaire was used, including the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS). From November to December 2024, 160 patients hospitalized at the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Oncological Gynecology of the Voivodeship Combined Hospital in Toruń participated. The study was anonymous, voluntary, and free of charge. Statistical analysis was performed using Statistica 13.3, applying non-parametric tests: Mann–Whitney U, Kruskal–Wallis, and Spearman’s rank correlation. The significance level was set at α = 0.05.
Results. The average anxiety level was 5.84 (VAS) and 11.40 (APAIS). Most demographic variables did not significantly .with increased anxiety.
Conclusions. Patients identifying anesthesia as the main source of anxiety showed significantly higher anxiety levels. Demographic and clinical factors were not significant predictors. A strong association was observed between anxiety intensity and the need for information, though the source or satisfaction with received information did not significantly affect anxiety levels.
