The role and responsibilities of a nurse in the care of an oncology patient with a colostomy due to colorectal cancer – Case Study

Abstract

Introduction. Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignant neoplasms, ranking third in incidence among both men and women. Surgical treatment of colorectal cancer often involves the creation of a stoma, which is necessary in cases where natural bowel passage is impossible or unsafe. This scientific article describes a case of an oncology patient who underwent stoma formation due to colorectal cancer and discusses the diagnostic, therapeutic, and adaptive aspects related to this procedure.

Objective. The aim of this study is to present the case of an oncology patient who underwent stoma formation due to colorectal cancer and to discuss the diagnostic, therapeutic, and adaptive aspects related to this procedure.

Case study. The patient, a 68-year-old man, was admitted to the hospital with a referral for surgery. Diagnostic procedures confirmed adenocarcinoma in the sigmoid colon. A tumor resection was performed, and a colostomy was created.

Conclusions. The creation of a stoma in the treatment of colorectal cancer is a life-saving procedure. Patient education and psychological support are crucial in adapting to the new life situation.
