Introduction. Shift work involves the implementation of tasks in accordance with a specific work schedule by employees working at the same workstations, but in different time slots. This applies to work in the morning, afternoon and night. Shift work includes 12- or even 24-hour shifts. Disruptions to the circadian rhythm have a negative impact on health. Lack of sleep and prolonged wakefulness contribute to the occurrence of bio-psycho-social problems and, consequently, to the development of diseases.
The aim. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of the shift work system on the health of nurse
Materials and methods. The research was conducted among 100 nurses working in shifts with various forms of employment at the Provincial Specialist Hospital. Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko in Włocławek. The study was conducted in the form of a diagnostic survey. The research tool was the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), which is based on ICD-10 criteria. To conduct the research, consent was obtained from the Bioethics Committee of the State Vocational University of Włocławek, number 32/22. And the consent of the director of the medical entity.
Results. Insomnia was the main problem indicated by respondents resulting from shift work. The research shows that the majority of respondents (71%) experience disturbances in the day-night circadian rhythm due to the shift work system. A significant group, 47% of respondents, are rather satisfied with working in shifts, while every fifth person expresses strong dissatisfaction with working at night.
Conclusions. Based on the results of our own research, it was shown that there is a statistically significant relationship between shift work and the perception of circadian rhythm disorders. Moreover, there is a statistical relationship between shift work and the impact of this system on family relationships. There are difficulties in maintaining regular contacts with family and spending time together, which translates into symptoms of negative family and social relationships. Shift work including night work affects the mental health and quality of life of employees.
