The role and task of nurse in caring for child diagnosed with type 1 diabetes - case study

Abstract

Introduction. Type 1 diabetes is the most common chronic disease today. According to research, the number of patients is constantly increasing from year to year, and the disease itself is still a mystery to the doctors of that time.

Aim. The aim of the work is to indicate the tasks of a nurse performed towards a child diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and to present nursing problems resulting from the disease.

Case study. A girl aged 8 was admitted to the hospital for severe abdominal pain, vomiting and weakness. Increased thirst (polydipsia) and polyuria (polyuria) had persisted in the child for about two weeks. For several days, the parents have observed increased lethargy, nausea, weakness and weight loss of about 2 kg in the girl. Oral mucous membranes visibly dry, acetone odor perceptible (Kussmaul's breath). Based on clinical symptoms and laboratory test results, a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes complicated by diabetic ketoacidosis was made. The parents show a lack of knowledge about the disease and are very concerned about their child's condition.

Conclusion. While caring for a child diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, the nurse is obliged to constantly monitor the basic vital parameters, strive to balance blood glucose levels, constantly check it and adequate hydration of the body, and create a positive atmosphere.
