Introduction. Working with children and their parents is a special professional challenge for a nurse. The nurse is the first source of information for parents. Currently, it must meet increasing demands from them. Scope of preventive measures and promoting health undertaken by a nurse is strictly defined by regulations, and she organizes her work independently. The most important element in this aspect of a primary care nurse is health education, without which there can be no talk of prevention.
Aim. The aim of the study is to assess the professional activities undertaken by a primary health care nurse for the prevention and health promotion of preschool children and to indicate issues in which the quality of services should be improved.
Material and methods. The method of diagnostic survey was used in this study. The research was carried out using a self-designed questionnaire, supplemented with fragments modified for the purposes of pediatric nursing in primary health care. The standardized tool was the "Questionnaire for assessing the level of satisfaction
of parents/guardians with nursing care" by Latour et al., which was adapted to the conditions of the national pediatric hospital and validated by dr Ewa Smoleń i Prof. Anna Ksykiewicz- Dorota. The study group consisted of 100 parents of children.
Results. Most of the respondents were women - 84%, as well as people aged 26-35 - 51%, with higher education - 51%. The research shows that the level of satisfaction with nursing care among the respondents is high. The highest rated detailed criterion regarding professional nursing care was "Did the nurse treat parents/guardians with respect", the average score was 3.99 points. As many as 71% of all respondents showed a high level of satisfaction in this matter. Regarding the performance of preventive and health-promoting tasks by the nurse, parents/guardians of children were less satisfied. The lowest rated detailed criterion was "the impact of preventive measures taken by the nurse affecting the child's health" - the average answer was 3.26 points.
Conclusions. during a visit with a child to the facility, parents/guardians observe the nurse's work and evaluate it in many aspects. They pay special attention to the nurse's professionalism in caring for a child. In this regard, they show great satisfaction, which proves that nurses perform their duties diligently. An aspect that needs special attention and improve the quality of preventive actions. The involvement of nurses in the performance of preventive and health-promoting tasks should be strengthened, and above all in health education, in the quality of guidance given to parents.
