Assessment of the quality of life of patients after myocardial infarction

Introduction. Myocardial infarction is to occlude or attach a coronary artery, followed by a thrombus, leading to myocardial necrosis. Myocardial infarction is a problem in many diseases, it can lead to a decrease in the quality of life. Myocardial infarction is often a disease visible in Poland as well as in other highly developed countries.
Aim. Assessment of the quality of life of patients after myocardial infarction.
Material and methods. The method of diagnostic survey was used in this study. An anonymous self-questionnaire and the SF-36 questionnaire for assessing the quality of life were used to conduct the research. The study group consisted of 99 people, both women and men aged 35 to 87, staying at the Department of Cardiology in Włocławek. Each person subjected to the study was informed about the anonymity, the purpose of the research and the method of completing the research.
Results. The predominant group of people were men - 59.6%. The respondents assessed the quality of life as a significant deterioration of mental state and lower physical fitness. It has been proven that a previous myocardial infarction has a negative impact on the quality of life. 43.4% of respondents are dissatisfied with their health and feel worse since the onset of a heart attack than in the previous year, it is 60.6%. Patients feel restricted to activities requiring increased energy demand, such as: running, lifting weights, practicing sports with high involvement after heart attack. The restrictions affected as many as 83.8% of respondents. The surveyed group of people after a heart attack experiences frequent fatigue - 40.4%, and 79.9% of people experience short-term fatigue.
Conclusions.1. A previous myocardial infarction has a negative impact on the quality of life. 43.4% of respondents indicate dissatisfaction with their health. The remaining 60.6% describe their health as worse than in the previous year. 2. The quality of life of patients after myocardial infarction is characterized by deterioration of mental state and limited physical fitness. For the surveyed population, respondents indicated a deterioration in their mental state, including: 2% were constantly depressed and sad, while 57.6% felt depressed and sad for some time. Physical limitations resulting from increased energy demand were indicated by 83.8% of respondents.
