‘Let them write…’: the publishing activity of the Student Government of the Catholic University of Lublin in the last decade of the Polish People’s Republic

Abstract

As a result of the law about censorship of 31 July 1981, the conditions of publishing texts in print somewhat changed. Internal prints of an organization were among texts which no longer underwent the preliminary control. Owing to this, numerous student magazines, published as internal prints of the university, sprung us like mushrooms in the Catholic University of Lublin in a small circulation. At least eleven of them were published by the student government or its sub-departments. The group included both magazines which appeared only once or a few times ( e.g. “Spojrzenia”, “Brzytwa”) and the ones which went beyond the university entourage (e.g. “BIS”).

Barbara Centek, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. Institute of Information Science and Book Studies

Barbara Centek, Ph.D, works as a scholar in the Institute of Scientific Information and Bibliology of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. Her research interest concentrate on the issues of reading and the press in the post-war period. In 2004 she graduated from Nicolaus Copernicus University, the Department of Library Science and Scientific Information. Under the supervision of Prof. dr hab. Grażyna Gzella she prepared her doctoral dissertation titled Scientific and Popularized Science magazines of the Lublin Land in the years 1944-1989, which she defended in 2009.
