Between Sacrum and Profanum: Orthodox Sacral Buildings in Warsaw in the Second Polish Republic (1919–1939)
In 1914 in Warsaw there operated over thirty Orthodox churches including the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in the Saxon Square (Plac Saski) – the biggest orthodox temple in the western part of the Russian Empire. The construction included buildings erected for Russian officials and soldiers who came to Warsaw with their families. The article describes the history of Warsaw’s Orthodox temples in the Second Polish Republic (1919–1939), when such buildings were often considered the unwanted legacy after the period of the long occupation of Poland. The author attempts to show to what an extent the authorities and the public treated Orthodox churches as the places of worship and to what a degree they were still regarded as the symbol of the partitions of Poland and the tsar’s policy of Russification
