In the German and Bohemian historiography the German and Bohemian king Wenceslaus IV (1361–1419) is considered to have been the most ambivalent ruler of the Luxembourg dynasty. This ambivalence is reflected in numerous legends, which blame the “gloomy” personality of Wenceslaus for his political mistakes. Many of them resulted from the fight for power between the king, the knighthood and the clergy, which broke out in Bohemia after the death of Emperor Charles IV. What had particular influence on the subsequent defamation of Wenceslaus was his long-lasting conflict with the archbishop of Prague Johannes von Jentzenstein (Jan of Jenštejn) along with the murder of the vicar-general John of Nepomuk in 1393. The article presents the manner in which the arguments from the anti-royal treatise written by the archbishop immediately after the assassination were included in the decree about the king’s dethronement issued by the cleric prince electors in 1400.
