The Order of the Holy Sepulchre, operating in Poland since the mid–12th century, had established in Poland its thirty seats by the end of the Middle Ages. The potential provided the foundations for the Polish province of the order. Moreover, it gavethe provosts of the monastery in Miechów independence from the Jerusalem patriarchs. The subsequent stages of strengthening the power of the Miechów provosts were connected with political conflicts in Central Europe and the crisis of the Church during the schism and the period of the conciliation movement. The Polish-Bohemian conflict meant that its Silesian branch broke away and the office of the Miechów provost was reserved for Polesonly. The authority of Miechów’s provosts increased owing to the competition between popes, anti-popes, papacy and ecumenical councils.
