The Vision of the Renewal of the Church in the Light of the Polish Synod Statutes of ca. 1400

The article attempts to present the idea of the revival of the Church in Poland at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. The Reformation ideas assumed the necessity to provide legal protection to religious communities against secularization, the independence of religious institutions in their relations with monarchs and noblemen along with a closer subordination to bishops. The major step leading to the reform of the local Church was to be the moral and intellectual revival of the clergy. Lay believers were warned against interfering into the matters reserved for the clergy and against breaching the “freedom“ and rights of the Church. For bishops-legislators the reform of the Church meant the regularization of religious law.References
