Miasto, uniwersytet, archiwum. Archiwum Uniwersytetu Johanna Wolfganga Goethego we Frankfurcie nad Menen
Uniwersytet we Frankfurcie nad Menem został założony w 1914 roku. Był to pierwszy uniwersytet fundacyjny w Niemczech, środki finansowe na utrzymanie tej instytucji miały pochodzić od obywateli tego miasta. Dzieje tej uczelni to nie tylko część historii Frankfurtu, lecz także historii nauki i oświaty XX wieku. Archiwum uniwersytetu frankfurckiego istnieje od 2002 roku i wypełnia zadania archiwum państwowego na Uniwersytecie. Od sierpnia 2003 można znaleźć informacje o nim na portalu internetowym UNESCO. Instytucja ta należy do największych archiwów uniwersyteckich w Niemczech. Archiwum posiada własny statut. Na jego zasób składa się ponad 5000 metrów bieżących akt, zbiór fotografii i liczący około 7500 jednostek oraz 50 spuścizn profesorskich. W archiwum działa również biblioteka podręczna, w której znajduje się ponad 3000 tytułów. Archiwum jest instytucją publiczną, z założenia dostępną wszystkim zainteresowanym. Służy badaniom naukowym, kształceniu ogólnemu i studiowaniu na uniwersytecie oraz wspomaga administrację w jej zadaniach. Archiwum uniwersytetu jest również jego skarbcem: obok dokumentów fundacyjnych czy umów, w jego magazynach są przechowywane pieczęcie, medale oraz dzieła sztuki.
