Abstract

To what extent does the distinction between free and unfree labor relations make sense in light of the history and dynamics of capitalism? On the basis of a cursory analysis of discourses on slavery and wage labor since the late eighteenth century (especially in German-speaking circles), an attempt is made to discuss and contextualize some of the literature in English and French over the last 300 years.
