Migrant workers and harvest helpers in German agriculture: Status and problems of historical labour migration in the “long” 19th century in the mirror of early press reports

Rural labour migration, which in contrast to urbanization and industrialization was long overshadowed by research in cultural and economic history, was the focus of European and German labour market policy in the period between the Enlightenment and the beginning of the First World War. In agriculture as well as in the energy and construction industries, countless helpers from economically weak regions arrived at times of economic boom and found bread and work there for weeks and months. In the mirror of the contemporary press – newspapers and magazines stand for the public as classified by Jürgen Habermas – we illuminated the fates of migrating peat cutters, hop pickers, brick workers and agricultural harvest helpers.
