During the interwar period, two public collections of foreign modern art were created in the First Czechoslovak Republic. Among the prominent initiators of acquiring French modern art by the Moderni Galerie was Vincenc Kramář, a distinguished collector and art historian. During that same period, the East Slovak Museum in Košice started to purchase pieces of modern art from Hungarian artists, which was in turn inspired by a lawyer and art historian, Josef Polák. Although both collections originated from political events, neither would have been possible without the passion or the abilities of Kramář and Polák. The article presents these two art historians and their efforts to promote the collecting of modern art.
