Abstract

The aim of the article is to show different forms of caring for the poor in Lublin in the 19th century. The aim of the work is not only to present a certain state of things that existed in a given period, but also to show good practices which can be an inspiration to undertake wide-scale activities for the benefit of another human being. In this work archival sources, printed sources and literature were used. In the discussed period there were several shelters for the poor of different religions and orphanages for Polish and Jewish children. Someof these institutions were of medieval origin and underwent various changes over the centuries; others were a response to current needs and were established as an expression of social involvement of broad social strata. Thanks to the involvement of many communities, it was possible to provide assistance to those most in need, which also translated into building social solidarity and had an educational dimension. In the period under discussion, social care began to undergo significant changes as a result of social, economic and political changes. On the one hand the pre-partition model of care was still in place, while on the other hand the foundations of a modern welfare system were being laid, built on solidarity and mutual responsibility for others.
