ORWELL ACCORDING TO LECHOŃ
The text discovers an unknown fact from the history of the reception of Orwell’s novel “1984” in Polish: this literary piece was presented as a series of broadcast plays by the radio station Voice of America in Washington in November 1949. Poet Jan Lechoń was the author of the adaptation. These radio plays were emitted four years prior the publication of the translation by Juliusz Mieroszewski in the Literary Institute in Paris in 1953. The text explores Lechoń’s engagement in the translation and adaptation, the reasons for which he took up this task; there are also elements of his personal biography which could have had some influence on his interpretation and adaptation of this novel. This article is an introduction to the first edition of the radio text adaptation made by Lechoń, discovered in his archive of the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences in America.
