Evacuation, escapes and displacements… War-time and post-war experiences of Masurians/Germans on the basis of biographical materials from Ełk county

The paper focuses on the war-time and post-war emigration of Masurians and Germans from Ełk County. The aim of the paper is to discuss the processes which caused the massive exodus of people who lived in this area before the outbreak of the Second World War as well as to identify the main waves of migration. On the basis of personal documents – such as journals, letters, personal notes, and memoirs – it was possible to distinguish changes in the numbers of inhabitants in Ełk County occurring during the Second World War caused by such factors as drafting men into the army, influx of labour migrants and inhabitants of the Third Reich (the so-called “Berliners”), evacuations, escaping the incoming armies and violence and deportations to the USSR as well as post-war deportations, displacements and emigration. All those factors led to the almost complete disappearance of the Masurian/German community in Ełk Country. Currently, there are only around 150 people who identify as Masurian/German in the Ełk County; as a result, there are almost none Masurians living in both Ełk – the historical capital of Masuria – and the whole county.
