Letters by Kazimierz Wierzyński and Jerzy Giedroyc: 4 out of 440 (edited by Beata Dorosz)

Abstract

Presented below and published for the first time are four letters by Kazimierz Wierzyński and Jerzy Giedroyc from 1962/1963 and the beginning of 1968. It is a minimal selection taken from a correspondence dialogue between the poet and the editor, a collection of over 440 from the years 1944–1969, preserved in the archives of “Kultura” in Maisons-Laffitte. They relate directly to the article A poet “at one’s service” in the embrace of a “great manipulator” (on the margins of letters by Kazimierz Wierzyński and Jerzy Giedroyc), published in the presented issue of “Art of Editing”, and partly illustrate its contents. The letters reveal the cooperation of two prominent individuals – the editor who perceives the Parisian monthly magazine as an element of an extensive cultural and political activity, realized among others owing to the poet highly respected by emigrants appreciating his moral values. The works prove that the common denominator of both political and literary projects, but also of the rigorous assessment of other activities, was for both correspondents their deep and authentic interest in Polish matters. The editorial study and publication of all archive resources which introduce some significant elements of knowledge to the picture of independence emigration as well as to artistic and political biography of Wierzyński and Giedroyc are expected to be published in the future.
