The article presents history and purposes of collection “Polish Artist’s Book of XX & XXI Century”. Next, the works gathered in the collection were analysed in the formal and functional context in order to see if they can be called books in the meaning of book studies. Various aspects have been examined, including: printing, presence of text, functions and physical properties. The results were collated with theories of esteemed scientists: Karol Głombiowski, Stefan Vrtel-Wierczyński, Ryszard Cybulski, Paul Otlet and Clive Phillpot. As a consequence of these actions, it was established that analysed works should be perceived as representatives of visual arts rather than books or even documents.
