Poems from the journey – in a found raptularius by Juliusz Słowacki

A notebook found in the Moscow library from Juliusz Słowacki’s journey to the East (to Greece, Egypt, Holy Land, Syria and Lebanon; August 1836- June 1837)- allows to resume in-depth studies of the 75-page manuscript as a poetic-plastic notebook, a travel diary, a poetic raptularius. The notebook contains entries of different nature and content, but its structure generally coheres with the main stages of the journey (Greece, Egypt, Holy Land, the stay at a monastery in Lebanon). The subject of detailed analysis are selected poems taken from the notebook- genetically and thematically related to particular places within the journey. Reading the poems written in the notebook’s textual space and the journey’s geographical time and space allows for better understanding of the semantics of particular compositions, as well as more precisely define the time and space of writing the entries.References
