The article discusses the idea of the overall graphic design of a book using selected examples from the work of one of the strongest pillars of the Polish school of illustration, Bohdan Butenko (1931–2019). Dating from the period of the artist’s greatest activity, the following are analyzed: the cover for the sensational novel for young people Cyryl, gdzie jesteś? by Wiktor Woroszylski (1962), the cover of a school-themed youth poem by Agnieszka Osiecka, Wzór na diabelski ogon (1974), and the wrapper and cover of an anthology for adults collecting diabolical works by Polish writers and poets, entitled Diabli wiedzą co... (1972). Referring to terminology related to architecture, following Butenko’s well-established term in the literature of the subject as an “architect of the book”, the author attempts to point out the connections between the elements of the overall design fully visible on the cover/wrapper. Also analyzed are these three original, and each time completely different, concepts.
