The Catholic parish in Janowo in Powisle region (in the former Diocese of Chelmno/Culm) was served by clergy working in the Diocese of Warmia/Ermland since the final days of 1945. From at least 1954, the state administration did not agree to the appointment of a permanent pastor residing at the parish. In June 1955, a health centre was opened in the parochial house. There was an actual downgrading of the status of the parish, making it a chapel-of-ease. The resistance of the inhabitants attached to the Church, the mistakes of the local Kwidzyn officials and the firm action undertaken by the Curia of the Diocese of Chelmno contributed to the failure of these efforts.
